Co-creating HK Design+ exhibition is part of a wider cultural exchange programme organised by Hong Kong Design Centre to promote HK’s creative talent and exchange of ideas with design communities. The programme includes the design exchange tour of San Francisco and Los Angeles with delegates from Hong Kong and two exhibitions held one in San Francisco and another in Hong Kong as part of DesignInspire event at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.
Working in close collaboration with the fabricators in both San Francisco and Hong Kong, SKY YUTAKA helped to project manage the exhibition installation process and designed series of display system utilising CNC milling. Inspired by traditional Japanese joinery, the display system components comprise of various joints and slot design without nails or glue. To minimise wastage from the milling process, the cut-out from standard 4×8 plywood panels were re-used for ceiling panels, again with the use of only slot and pin joints, which contributed to creation of a unique atmosphere where various geometries in the ceiling cut-outs have direct relationship to the display systems below.
